Jessica Morden is the Labour MP for Newport East. She was first elected in the 2005 General Election and was re-elected in the 2010 and 2015 General Election.
She was elected as the first female MP in South East Wales.
Brought up in nearby Cwmbran she was educated at Croesyceilliog School before reading History at Birmingham University. Following University she was also a student at Coleg Gwent Nash Campus. Before becoming a Member of Parliament Jessica worked for two local MP's (Llew Smith in Blaenau Gwent and Huw Edwards in Monmouth) and following that for the Wales Labour Party where she was General Secretary.
As the first woman MP in Wales to have children whilst elected, she was a member of the Speakers Committee to establish the first nursery in the House of Commons.
She was formerly PPS to Peter Hain and Paul Murphy when they each served as Secretary of State for Wales, and to Owen Smith in opposition. She has served on the Justice Committee and Welsh Affairs Select Committee, and is currently the Senior Whip in the Opposition Whips Office.
An active member, and former Chair, of the All Party Steel Group, she is also active on the Children in Wales Group and is currently Co-Chair of the All Party Mindfulness Group. She is also a member of many other All Party Groups.
Jessica campaigns in Parliament on issues ranging from Steel (Newport East constituency includes the Llanwern and Orb steelworks), consumer issues such as Farepak, organophosphate poisoning, the impact of changes to benefits, employment issues, lowering the Severn Bridge tolls and served on the Trade Union Bill.
Jessica and her partner Sion live in Maindee in Newport and have two children.
