Ken Skates|Clwyd South / De Clwyd

Ken was born in 1976 at Wrexham Maelor Hospital and is one of five boys to parents Mary and Ken Snr.

He went to local comprehensive schools Ysgol y Waun and the Alun School, Mold, where he studied A-levels in Physics, Maths, English and Politics. After achieving four A grades, Ken went to Cambridge University to study social and political science, specialising in European regional policy and economics.

After graduating, Ken took time out in America before joining the Leader newspaper in his native North Wales. He studied for his NVQ in Journalism at Yale College in Wrexham (now Coleg Cambria) and also did freelance work for the Daily Express.
Ken has also served as office manager for Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami, was a Community Councillor in Pantymwyn and also a community organiser.

In May 2011, Ken was elected to the National Assembly for Wales with 42.4% of the vote in Clwyd South. His keen interests include enhancing the identity and tourism potential of Clwyd South, as well as improving mental health care and physical fitness. He is also determined to improve job and training prospects for young people, as well as protect crucial services for the vulnerable.
Having learnt Welsh at school until the age of 16, Ken remains a keen learner and is also a passionate supporter of the arts in Wales. He is a vice-president of Rhos Male Voice Choir and Llangollen International Eisteddfod.

Fe fynychodd ysgolion gyfun lleol; Ysgol y Waen ac Ysgol Alun, Yr Wyddgrug, ble astudiodd Lefel A mewn Ffiseg, Mathemateg, Saesneg a Gwleidyddiaeth. Ar ôl ennill pedwar gradd A, aeth Ken i Brifysgol Caergrawnt i astudio Gwyddoniaeth Cymdeithasol a Gwleidyddol, gan arbenigo mewn polisi ac economeg rhanbarthol Ewropeaidd.

Ar ôl graddio, aeth Ken i America cyn dychwelyd i fro ei enedigaeth i ymuno â’r papur newydd Leader.? Fe astudiodd am ei NVQ mewn newyddiaduraeth yng Ngholeg Iâl yn Wrecsam (Coleg Cambria erbyn hyn) ac bu hefyd yn gwneud dipyn o waith i’r Daily Express.

Mae Ken wedi gwasanaethu fel rheolwr swyddfa i Mark Tami, sef yr Aelod Seneddol dros Alun a Glannau Dyfrdwy, roedd yn Gynghorydd Cymuned ym Mhantymwyn, ac yn drefnydd cymunedol.

Ym mis Mai 2011 fe’i etholwyd Ken i Gynulliad Cenedlaethol Cymru gyda 42.4% o’r bleidlais yn Ne Clwyd.? Mae ei ddiddordebau brwd yn cynnwys ehangu hunaniaeth a thwristiaeth De Clwyd, yn ogystal â gwella gofal iechyd meddwl a ffitrwydd corfforol.? Mae hefyd yn awyddus i wella rhagolygon swyddi a hyfforddiant i bobl ifanc, a diogelu gwasanaethau hanfodol ar gyfer y rhai bregus.
Ar ôl dysgu Cymraeg yn yr ysgol hyd at 16 oed, mae Ken yn ddysgwr brwd, a hefyd yn gefnogwr angerddol o’r celfyddydau yng Nghymru.
