Jo Stevens MP
Secretary of State for Wales
Jo Stevens grew up in a village in Flintshire, North Wales. She studied law at Manchester University, graduating in 1988. For over 25 years, she was a solicitor and director of Thompsons Solicitors, UK-wide law firm dedicated to representing trade union members and others injured or mistreated at work.
Jo has been a Labour Party member and activist for over 30 years, and began her parliamentary career when she was elected as the MP for Cardiff Central in 2015. She has two adult sons and in her spare time enjoys good books, music and is an avid follower of a number of sports.
Achievements
Jo serves in Keir Starmer’s Shadow Cabinet, having been appointed as Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Wales in 2021. In this role, she has worked tirelessly to expose the UK Conservative Government’s countless broken promises to Wales – with an indefatigable eye on Tory failure to deliver on Welsh steel, rail infrastructure and replacement EU funding for Wales – as well as ensuring that Labour’s vision of a UK Labour government working in tandem with our Welsh Labour Government to build Wales’ future is heard loud and clear in the Commons.
Jo has undertaken a number of other parliamentary roles, and prior to her appointment as Shadow Secretary of State for Wales held the position of Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. She was a member of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee for three years, and has also been a member of the Justice Select Committee, the Standards Committee, the Privileges Committee and the Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee. Between January 2016 and October 2016, she was Shadow Justice Minister for Prisons and Probation and the Shadow Solicitor General, and was Shadow Secretary of State for Wales from 2016-2017.
